In our latest Employee Spotlight, we’re shining the spotlight on Walter Hendriks, Director of Compliance EU for Privalgo BV.
Walter joined Privalgo in March 2024 to drive our European expansion with his expertise in compliance and regulation.
In this interview, we learn what it’s like to be part of Privalgo’s EU leadership team, Walter’s path from trading pro to regulation whiz, why working in a business that’s really going somewhere matters, and much more.
What’s your job role and what does that entail on a daily basis?
I’m part of Privalgo’s EU leadership team, focusing on Compliance, Legal, and Regulatory strategy.
On a daily basis, that means navigating the evolving regulatory landscape, setting the right standards from Day 1, and ensuring we build a strong foundation that supports growth — not stifles it.
I also work closely with our Dutch regulator (DNB) to ensure our European expansion stays firmly on track.
What excites you about the payments business?
The speed of change. This is an industry where regulatory clarity, technology, and customer demand evolve fast — and staying ahead means being agile, curious, and bold.
At Privalgo, our 5-year vision isn’t just ambitious, it’s actionable. We’re not here to replicate; we’re here to lead with smarter FX solutions, embedded compliance, and a scale-up mindset. That’s the kind of energy I thrive on.
What was your path to getting into fintech?
I started out in trading — deep in the world of derivatives — which gave me an instinct for risk and reward.
From there, I moved into regulatory roles across financial services, eventually leading large Compliance teams.
Joining Privalgo felt like the natural next step: combining fintech innovation with regulatory depth, while building something meaningful from the ground up.
What key piece of advice would you give someone entering the payments business?
Find a business that’s actually going somewhere.
The payments space is full of noise, but if you land at a firm with real vision, clear execution, and solid leadership, the growth curve is not just fast — it’s exciting.
Also: speak up early, ask real questions, and find someone who’ll challenge your thinking. I’ve always surrounded myself with people who think differently than I do — it’s the best way to stay sharp.
Who’s your biggest inspiration in the workplace and why?
Johan Cruyff. He wasn’t just a phenomenal football player — he redefined how the game is played.
His vision, tactical genius, and ability to see possibilities others couldn’t are deeply inspiring. But it goes beyond football.
Through the Cruyff Foundation, he created opportunities for less privileged children around the world by building accessible football pitches — the Cruyff Courts.
He also coached people with Down’s syndrome and laid the groundwork for the Cruyff University. His legacy is one of innovation, inclusion, and leadership.
When and where are you happiest?
There are a few different occasions actually. Outdoor sports in general. Sunday early morning rides through the forest and across the heath on my mountain bike with a group of friends.
The nature in my part of the Netherlands is very beautiful and it really takes your mind off things. It’s also a good exercise.
Obviously, our country is a flat as can be, but we still call it mountain biking … 🙂.
Playing a round of golf is always enjoyable. I picked up the sport less than 3 years ago, and it allows me to be outside, appreciate beautiful places, and enjoy good company. Playing against yourself can be really challenging.
Then there’s the rare chance to go sailing, feeling the wind in the sails as you travel from A to B — a true feeling of absolute freedom.
